The Thrill of the Deal

November 5, 2026

November feels particularly momentous this year for me. A consequential midterm election with record-breaking early voting. A beautiful celebration of the 125th anniversary of Brooklyn Law School at the Brooklyn Museum. And next week, the astonishing milestone of one whole year as the founder and principal of Meeka J. Bondy, PLLC.

Going out on your own, without all the trappings and comforts of an established position—the title, the guaranteed direct deposit every two weeks, and the support of a much larger team—tests more than your resolve to do the work. It also makes you reflect on why you chose to become a lawyer in the first place, and why you still want to be one.

For me, opening my own shop meant zeroing in on what I really loved about practicing law. And when I thought about the most fulfilling moments of my career, I kept coming back to the thrill of being at the table.

I also realized that the thrill of that moment—laying out your position, making your arguments, and maybe even winning your point—begins long before you ever enter the room.

The strategizing and number crunching. The internal drafts, issues lists, and comments circulated and accounted for. The drafting and redrafting, turn after turn, until finally, two parties sign a deal.

A deal is so much more than a piece of paper, a contract full of terms and conditions. It is an architectural masterpiece, with everything from the plumbing system to the spires at the top of the tower designed to work together.

I realized that I still wanted to be that architect. The lawyer analyzing, strategizing, negotiating, and yes, drafting the deals. Helping to shape some of the most challenging media and technology transactions of our time.

A big thank you to my clients (you know who you are!), this professional community, and all my friends and family who have supported me throughout my 30+ years as a lawyer—and a happy one at that.
